EYFS Framework
In Early Years, learning and development is split into seven interconnected areas:
• Communication and Language
• Physical Development
• Personal, Social, Emotional Development
• Literacy
• Mathematics
• Understanding the World
• Expressive Arts and Design
The PKC Early Years materials have a strong focus on the specific area of Understanding the World (UW). History, Geography and Science are interwoven within UW as children are encouraged to observe and explore the physical world, communities and life both past and present. Pupils are encouraged to think about scientists, historians and geographers and consider what they do, what they think about and how they find out what they know. This foundational knowledge helps children to develop disciplinary understanding over time.
At the end of Reception, pupils are assessed against the Early Learning Goals (ELGs).
Within Understanding the World, the ELGs are split into the following strands:
• Past and Present (History)
• People, Culture and Communities (Geography)
• The Natural World (Science)
