Curriculum oversight

The role of a subject leader is to become the experts of their subject within their school, even if they would not consider themselves ‘experts’ before taking on their role. Their role is to have curriculum oversight of their subject from EYFS through to Year 6. Subject leaders need to familiarise themselves with the national curriculum requirements and understand how Firfield’s curriculum meets these requirements and more. The sequencing of the curriculum has been meticulously planned, and subject leaders play an integral part in ensuring that the curriculum is being implemented correctly and professionally by staff. By emitting lessons, or changing the sequence, this may have detrimental effects and will disadvantage pupils. Subject leaders need to understand the substantive and the disciplinary knowledge within their subjects. They should also understand the local context of our children in Breaston and the surrounding area, and how our curriculum has been written, or adapted, to reflect the school’s local community.
